Clue Simulator: The Playthough

Clue Simulator: The Playthough

My choice of a final project for Programming 1 was to create a game similar to the Hunger Games Simulator. If you’d like to learn more about the origins of the idea, click here. Instead of being based off of the Hunger Games, my program is based off of the board game, Clue, though the idea of each character being eliminated comes from the novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. For those of you who don’t know what the Hunger Game Simulator is, basically you’re given a list of characters from the Hunger Games, or in my case, Clue. Once you click the proceed button, the characters are put into a list. Next to each character is a line of text saying what happened to them/what they did in that round. The rounds continue until all but one character is eliminated. If my description didn’t make much sense to you, you can click here and try the Hunger Games Simulator out, or you can click here to see how it works. Lastly, if you’d like a few more technicalities, click here.

The program begins by giving a backstory on the game. The first section under the “Hampshire, England” and the date is made to represent the letter that each guest received from Wadsworth, one of Mr. Boddy’s (the owner of the Boddy Manor) butlers. I know it’s a lot of words, but I highly recommend reading this, since it gives the game more of a plot line.

This second image shows the character images window that pops up before the game allows you to select a character. This isn’t shown in the video due to technical difficulties, so this is what it should look like. Having images of each character gives each character more of a personality, so I feel this was a nice touch before letting you choose one.

This next picture shows the character selection. In order to pick which character you believe to be the murderer, you must enter a number by one of the names in the list. As you can see in the image, the 5 circled in red shows that I selected Professor Peter Plum. This is confirmed by the highlighted section below it saying “Character selected: Professor Plum”. The game will only let you continue once you choose a character.

As you go through the game, each round would look something like this. You don’t need to read through each of them, though I think it’s kind of fun. What each character does is randomly generated, so it’s different every time. If your character is eliminated, like you can see mine was in the highlighted section, then you lose. If your character is the last to survive, then you win and there will be a different outcome.
